Morning Coffee

In the blog this week I would like to discuss the morning. Something that in recent days has had a new look to it, shout out standard time. Mornings, more so recently, have been one of my favorite times during the day. The calm before the storm if you will. Mornings for me have become almost a metaphor and strong bellwether for the rest of my day.

Being in a service based business where your day begins outside of an office means that you need to be an early starter. As a result of this I have begun getting up even earlier than needed to enjoy some bit of my day before it takes on a life of its own. In the morning I find it incredibly helpful to enjoy some coffee, water, and look ahead at the daily schedule and plan accordingly. Planning the day out has become one of my favorite challenges. Not because it’s particularly challenging to plan a day, but it’s been a game of mine to see how on pace I can stay and avoid obstacles and distractions that would slow Park West’s pace down. As a first time business owner I have found it to be helpful to plan out a day and play offense instead of constantly reacting to things that come my way and play defense all day.

In the morning I can get a sense of what the day will be shipping up to look like. As mentioned, of course having a predetermined schedule is helpful, but getting my thoughts in order is really what is important to me in the morning. Making sure I understand what lies ahead of me that day; the challenges, the timing, the clients that need extra attention and on and on. Taking a few minutes in the morning and planning for the day ahead, playing offense, has been extremely helpful and rewarding to me as someone who is constantly trying to keep multiple plates spinning at the same time.

I have taken my morning routine of planning and playing offense and expanded it to my whole way of planning this business. To the naked eye there is not much to a cleaning business. Get appointments, clean, run the credit card, call it a day. Like all jobs, there is more than meets the eye. As a solo operator there are of course a million things on my plate and this being my first year in business is no exception. Playing offense, looking ahead, being an active participant and planner in my day/ life is something that takes a ton of effort and practice, but has been one of the best mental switches I have made over the course of the last year.

Sitting at my desk this morning, enjoying my coffee, reflecting about yesterday and planning for a new day today. Thinking about how I can play more offense, how can I plan for and set into motion more ideas that will really start to take foot, weeks, months, and years from now. From sitting at a desk thinking about the day to changing the way I think to planning for years ahead; you never know where a cup of coffee in the morning will take you.
