The Room Series: Bathrooms

In today’s blog we would like to kick off the “Room Series” where we will highlight different rooms throughout a home periodically to provide tips, tricks, and maybe some horror stories.

Today, in our third blog, we will be discussing bathrooms, more specifically showers. The bane of your cleaning existence. Gross, wet, daunting. Who would want to use their free time to clean a shower? We don’t blame you, we have seen our fair share of dread in our clients eyes as they walk us through the preliminary inspection of the house pre-clean. Most of the time we see clients almost pass over, or mutter under their breath, “Oh and here is the bathroom…..” as they trail off and keep walking down the hall, embarrassed. The reality is, bathrooms are nothing that should be scary or embarrassing, they can be some of the most rewarding spots in your home to clean.

The Scene

Imagine yourself getting home after a long day, you have worked all day and went for a run after to burn off some stress. Time for a shower, only to walk in and see the same mold and organge-ish residue at your feet and in the crevases of the shower. This is not a sight all too uncommon for Park West Cleaning when inspecting a home, especially if you are living in a rental property with roommates. Upon walking into your bathroom to shower up, a shower you have been looking forward to all run, you see the orange-ish mold, some black mold, maybe a leaky shower head? The wind is completely taken out of your sails, this place is gross, not refreshing at all. Living in a rental, this is likely your reality, but it doesn’t have to be!

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” – Benjamin Franklin

Regular maintenance is something that should be applied to a shower to prevent the larger issue of mold growth. Just like a few toe touchers before a run, there are a few preventative measures that can be taken to reduce the mold in your shower, and make getting clean a more pleasant experience for you.

The Solution

First and foremost we need to actually (pause for dramatic effect) CLEAN THE SHOWER! How are your going to do that, you don’t have any tools, how are you going to scrub tile? Fear not, you likely have more than you need to get going.

Look under your sink, grab the bleach that you haven’t touched in 7 months, yep the bottle all the way back there and look in the fridge for some vinegar. For your shower cleaning concoction, you are going to mix in 1 part bleach, 1 part vinegar, and two parts water. Mix up the solution, and apply generously to the affected areas with your toothbrush. That’s right, you are going to use your regular toothbrush (chances are it was time for a new one anyway!) and scrub the affected areas with the brush after your solution has been sitting for 10 or so minutes. Now, we also like to add some Tide powder detergent to the toothbrush to help apply some grit to the scrub to really remove the mold. This should rid the majority of your mold issues for the foreseeable future.

Now, once we are clean, you are going to keep the solution you just created nearby and spray it onto your shower after your shower every couple of days. This will keep the mold at bay and allow you to enjoy your shower as it was intended to be. A place to be clean and refresh yourself. Just like that you have begun to improve your living space in a time and cost effective manner, something that you can take pride in.

Of course there are many options for cleaning your shower, between niche tools to specific chemicals. We have found however that there is nothing that beats a scrubber, your solution and some elbow grease. Taking the time to clean and appreciate your space will elevate your showers, but it will also provide you with more of a feeling of being home, which at the end of the day, is what we aim to provide at Park West Cleaning. Yes we are a cleaning company but at heart, we are a customer service company who wants to help bring you closer to home.

Whether you do it yourself, or call in the pros like us, our focus is to help bring you closer to a sense of home in your space. Thank you for reading, and as always, if you have any questions, comments, concerns please email us at Jack@ParkWestCleaning.com
