What Makes a Great House Cleaner?

In the blog this week I would like to discuss yet another topic that is close to my heart these days. What makes a great home cleaner? This is top of mind for me now more than ever it seems. As you may know from previous blog entries, I am in the middle of hiring a few more cleaners to bring on to assist with our continued growth at Park West Cleaning. This leads me back to my initial question, what makes a great home cleaner? There are many character and personality traits that I have found over the past 9 months that have led me to some insights that I wanted to share with you, as the reader, so that you know what to look for when trying to find the perfect home cleaner for you and your family.

Finding the right home cleaner is hard, full stop. On the surface it shouldn’t seem that finding a home cleaner would be something that would not be too tough, but as someone who has spent the better part of two months interviewing candidates every week, I can assure you it is. Trying to find a person, people, or company who can check all the boxes of your family’s individual needs is hard. Every home is different as is every homeowner. To try and thread the needle of a repeatable process and custom solution is hard, that’s why most residential cleaners are “cleaning ladies” or work for large corporations. There doesn’t seem to be a good middle ground. The type of person who is friendly and knows your home like an experienced cleaning lady, but will be on demand and allows for online booking doesn’t come around too often, that is where Park West can step in.

Over the course of the past 9 months or so I would say the number one character trait to look for in a cleaner is dependability. Are you going to do what you say you are going to do when you say you are going to do it? Finding a cleaning service that is on time and will communicate with you if they are even 15 minutes ahead of schedule or behind are few and far between. At Park West, although not yet perfect on our timing, we have been and will continue to be the industry leader in communication. Be it responding to questions from clients via email, text, or phone call, we always answer and provide the best communication possible. At the end of the day, nothing is more annoying than waiting around for an arrival window. Waiting feels like dealing with a cable company, not a cleaning service.

Eye for Detail

A close second in finding an indispensable cleaner is an eye for detail. This sounds pretty straightforward, and it is, but you would be surprised how many candidates have come for a trial clean and miss obvious pieces of dust or hair. When you are getting a Park West Clean, we get it all. There is no in-between and that is why we don’t have different levels of cleaning on our site. We don’t do light cleans, we just make sure your home is clean, like you intended. A cleaner with an eye for detail is someone who will see the streaks on the shower glass that aren’t visible until you change your eye level, who will see the dust and hair that you as the customer wont behind the toilet, getting on their hands and knees to vacuum under the bed to get dust and dirt that you didn’t even know what there. That is the level of customer service we aim to bring to our customers and require out of our cleaners.

The third and least common character trait, certainly one that I don’t see listed in job descriptions for other cleaning companies, is creativity. What does that have to do with home cleaning you might ask? Well, its shockingly important. Thinking creatively, like dirt, dust, or grime (only half joking) is something we teach at Park West when training new hires. Think like the dirt, be the dirt! Think, when I take off my shoes where does dust and dirt go, looking high above that ceiling fan, is there any dust up there? Part of the way I prompt our cleaners to think creatively is to reward them for finding new or unseen messes in client homes. This is nothing more than having our cleaners snap a close up photo of the mess and where it is in the home. Example, a cleaner sees a huge pile under a bed. They take a quick pic and are entered into a weekly contest for a gift card where the winner is the most creative picture of the week. Small rewards like this are what keeps our cleaners on their toes and ensure that your home is cleaner than you ever knew it would be.

Whether our cleaners are reaching out to you to let you know they are ahead of schedule and will be arriving 25 minutes early or they are taking pictures of fun and original messes that they cleaned up, our cleaners are exerting as much effort as possible to ensure your home is the cleanest it can be. Thank you as always for reading the blog this week. As always please reach out to me with any questions, comments or concerns at See you all next week!
